SIRACUSA

Già definita da Cicerone “la più grande e bella di tutte le città greche”, dal 2005 è stata dichiarata Patrimonio dell’Umanità dall’UNESCO.
Il nome deriva dall’antico siculo Syraka (abbondanza d’acqua) per la presenza nell’area di molti corsi d’acqua. Fu fondata nell’VIII secolo a.C. da coloni greci provenienti da Corinto sull’isola di Ortigia; nel corso degli anni divenne un’importante e potente città-stato della Magna Grecia.
Fra le sue bellezze artistiche si ricordano il Teatro e il Tempio di Apollo, di epoca greca, l’Anfiteatro romano, tra i più grandi di Italia, e il Duomo di età barocca.
Fra i suoi cittadini più illustri Santa Lucia, patrona della città a cui è dedicata l’omonima chiesa, e lo scienziato Archimede, di cui è visitabile la tomba. 
Di particolare interesse l’Orecchio di Dioniso, una grotta profonda 23 metri capace di amplifica il suono verso una cavità posta alla sua estremità.
Il 13 Dicembre viene celebrata la festa della patrona con spettacoli pirotecnici.

Once described by Cicero as “the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all”, Syracuse is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Its name in ancient native language means “abundance of water”, because of the many waterways in the area. The city was founded by Ancient Greek Corinthians in VIII B.C. on the Ortigia island; throughout the ages it became a very powerful city-state exerting influence over the entire Magna Grecia area.
Among its beauty spots there are the Theatre and the Apollo’s Temple, built in the Greek era, the Roman Amphitheatre, one of the biggest in Italy, and the baroque Cathedral.
Among its notable citizens there are Saint Lucy, patron of the city to whom is dedicated the homonymous church, and the scientist Archimedes, whose tomb is visited.
Another interesting site is the Ear of Dionysius, a 23-metres-high limestone cave with an extremely good acoustics, making even a small sound resonate throughout the top of the cave.
On December 13th is celebrated the feast of the patron saint with fireworks show.
