The most famous living Chinese artist and one of the most influential of our time, Ai Weiwei, occupies Palazzo Strozzi in Florence with his unconventionality and his provocative and dissident personality.
Ai Weiwei, winner of numerous competitions, designed, among others, the National Stadium in Beijing and the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in London, and has exhibited his works in the most important galleries in the world, such as the Tate Modern, the Guggenheim and the Royal Academy.
Born in Beijing but trained in prestigious design schools in New York, he was imprisoned for 80 days for his opposition to the Chinese regime, to be released in 2011, but without a passport and with the ban from speaking with the press for over a year. Despite this, the artist continued to organize exhibitions around the world and, again in possession of a passport from 2015, in 2016 he worked at Palazzo Strozzi, also producing a series of new installations, to create the exhibition “Ai Weiwei. Libero“.
From 23 September 2016 to 22 January 2017, for the first time in Italy, a major exhibition will celebrate the genius of this artist, who has emerged on the international scene as a symbol of the struggle for freedom of expression and the fight for the Human Right defense. Curated by Arturo Galansino, “Ai Weiwei. Libero ” exhibit historical works and new productions by the artist that will involve the facade, the courtyard, the Strozzina and the main floor, using for the first time the whole Palazzo Strozzi as a single exhibition space.
The exhibit follows his New Yorker experience in 80/9ies, when for the first time discovered the art and was influenced by Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp, his period of study at Parsons The New School for Design and Art students League, to continue with the great works of art of the 00ies, made of assembled materials, up to the recent times’ provocative and political works, such as the portraits of political dissidents made of LEGO.
Monumental installations, sculptures, symbolic objects of his career, videos and photographs, will allow to experience the life of Ai Weiwei, combining political activism, art, creative genius, past and present, traditional materials and techniques and sense of rebellion .
