The “Lightbulb Moment” of Paolo Schellino

Paolo Schellino and his family are the owner of UNA Golf Hotel Cavaglià in Biella, Italy.
The resort, part of  UNA Hotels & Resorts, includes 37 rooms, a nine-hole golf course and an Americanstyle steak house.
While successfully running the hotel and the golf club with  his brother Alberto, Paolo, a handsome Italian with an open-door policy and an artist infatuation, yearned for more. “Everything started with an idea to put focus on people who dedicate their life to art,” he explains. “I was looking for a place where the concept can spread. Then I fell in love with a building in Miami Beach”. He envisioned converting the ground floor, a former tattoo parlor, into an art studio-home where artists can work on, display and sell their wares, and the top two floors would serve as a residence for himself, his wife Elena and his two-year-old daughter, Carlotta.
He claims to have no artistic inclinations beyond a knack for graphic design and amateur photography, but this passion for the artist as much as the work has driven Schellino to develop “Light of Creativity”, a new studio, gallery and exhibition space in a most unlikely place: South Beach. Schellino named his company Light of Creativity not because of the sunbath the space gets daily, but because he wanted to spotlight artists’ works and the creative people behind the pieces (his logo is a lightbulb).
Typically buyers and artists don’t interact for myriad reasons, Schellino explains, but he wants the two worlds to work together, so he and his gallery are going to serve as a bridge: “I’m more than just a dealer. I want to take customers through the creator.” He intends to bring a new talent in, at least every six months to install works and show face periodically to interact with clients.
His new South Beach exhibition space is a gathering place where artists can discuss their work with the public and it will be open daily, by appointment. This spring will see a neon sign signalling Light of Creativity’s offcial opening.
The first artist showcased will be Luigi Stoisa. One of his works is currently on display at The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University, but the Light of Creativity exhibition will be his first in the United States.
Though Schellino is loath to put any labels or parameters on the genres of art he plans to have on display, he says he leans away from super-contemporary works and tends to gravitate toward traditional pieces with fresh, modern twists. Schellino promises “My doors are open to anyone interested in exploring the originality of talented people”.
