The Fontanelle Cemetery is located in the Health District, a place where history is full of ancient legends and tales still passed from generation to generation. The place of Greek origins was used over the years by Christians who placed in these caves the bodies of their loved. With the two largest outbreaks that hit the city, the plague of 1656 and the cholera of 1836, many of the bodies around the city were moved into the caves to prevent the onset of further illness.
Many legends are told about the attention that Neapolitans reserve to skulls, a cult obviously aimed to request a pardon. Tradition says that the grace was completed when the skulls began to sweat, but if the requests were not answered, they chose another skull starting all over again. The cult was linked to a lucky number that was then played at the lottery. Il Cimitero delle Fontanelle, situato nel cuore del Rione Sanità, è il luogo in cui la storia si intreccia con le antiche leggende e racconti ancora oggi tramandate di generazione in generazione. La storia del Cimitero della Fontanelle ha origini greche. La stessa necropoli venne usata in seguito dai cristiani che riponevano in queste cave di tufo i corpi dei loro cari. Con lo scoppio delle due più grandi epidemie che hanno colpito la città, la peste del 1656 e il colera del 1836, molti dei cadaveri sparsi per la città furono trasferiti nelle cave per evitare l’insorgere di ulteriori malattie. Intorno a questo luogo misterioso circolano molte leggende legate alle attenzioni che i napoletani riservavano ai teschi. Questo culto era ovviamente finalizzato alla richiesta di una grazia e pare che la più ricorrente fosse l’indicazione dei numeri fortunati da giocare al lotto.  La tradizione racconta che quando la grazia era compiuta i teschi iniziassero a sudare, se invece le richieste non venivano esaudite i fedeli sceglievano un altro teschio ricominciando nuovamente la trafila.
