Italian Carnival lasts from the end of January till Good Friday (this year February 19th), and its traditions date back to Italian historical events.
 The most ancient of all, is the Venice Carnival, characterized  by mystery and charm.
By wearing masks and long cloaks, Venetians used to hide their identity to avoid every affiliation to social classes, sex, religion, and to conceal the married status.
Venetians and tourists coming from all over the world, every year in February, fill the squares (campi) and the streets (calli)  taking part to the daily events and celebrations.
“Festa delle Marie” is the most famous feast. It is a procession with twelve beautiful girls and maids of honor, flag-wavers, musicians, all in traditional customs. At the “Flight of the Colombina” moment, a mechanical bird goes from St. Mark’s Bell Tower to Ducale Palace freeing  confetti and small gifts over St. Mark’s Square.
