It is the ancient seat of the Este family, who transformed the city into a major arts center still active today thanks to the many exhibitions organized by the National Art Gallery. Its Old Town is one of the best preserved examples of a medieval town, with the Estense Castle, the only one in Europe still surrounded by a moat. In May, you can attend the famous and ancient horse-race Palio di Ferrara in the main city square.
